Help For Winter Heating Bills Now Available Through LIHEAP

Wednesday, November 01, 2017

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Grants Open

As the cold weather season approaches, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania reminds customers that assistance with heating bills is available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Income-eligible customers can apply for grants now through April 6, 2018.

“At Columbia Gas, we want our customers to be safe and warm this winter, which is why we want to encourage everyone who is eligible to apply for this assistance,” said Deb Davis, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania manager, Universal Services. “Last year, more than 20,000 customers received assistance on their Columbia Gas bill. If you or someone you know is concerned about high heating bills, please apply for LIHEAP as soon as possible.”

LIHEAP is a federally funded program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services that helps income-eligible families pay winter heating costs. The program provides cash grants ranging from $200 to $1,000 to assist in paying winter heating bills. Also available are crisis grants, ranging from $25 to $500, to assist households without heat or in danger of being without heat.

LIHEAP funds are limited, so Columbia Gas urges eligible homeowners and renters to apply as soon as possible. Eligibility guidelines for LIHEAP change annually, and customers who may not have been eligible in the past are encouraged to reapply.

The income eligibility limit for the 2017-2018 program is 150 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. This means individuals with an annual income of up to $18,090 are eligible to apply. A family of four can earn an annual income of up to $36,900.

Natural gas customers in western Pennsylvania can call 1-866-857-7095 to learn more about LIHEAP. Customers are encouraged to apply online through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Access to Social Service website (COMPASS) at www.compass.state.pa.us.

To apply, the utility customer must provide the following information:

1. Names of all people in the household
2. Birth dates for all people in the household
3. Social Security numbers for all members of the household
4. Proof of income for all members of the household
5. A copy of a recent heating bill

In addition to LIHEAP, we offer a number of assistance programs to help customers struggling with household budgets. Customers can contact Columbia Gas at 1-800-537-7431 to learn more.
