Mark Kempic serves as president and chief operating officer of Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania and Maryland where he is responsible for designing and executing legislative, regulatory, commercial and external strategies as well as for overseeing the operation, maintenance and construction activities of both companies.
He leads over 800 engaged and committed employees and approximately 1,500 contract employees and is responsible for a $2.5 Billion pipeline replacement program across Pennsylvania and Maryland and the oversight of the operation and maintenance of over 7,500 miles of pipelines, regulator stations, meters and other facilities. Kempic previously held this role from 2012 to 2017.
Prior to this assuming this role in September of 2020, Kempic served as president and chief operating officer of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts where he was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the company, as well as all aspects of the restoration efforts in the Merrimack Valley. Kempic was placed in this role because of his proven track record of success and results in the operation and regulatory environment of a natural gas utility. Not only did he guide the company through a challenging time, he helped guide both leadership and employees through the sale of the company.
Kempic previously served as the NiSource Chief Transformation Officer and a member of the Executive Council. In this role, Kempic built on NiSource's efforts to integrate processes and technology across the company's seven-state footprint.
Kempic began his career with Columbia Gas in 1979 as a part-time night dispatcher and continued through the company serving as an engineering technician, operations research analyst, information center analyst, gas supply analyst, and corporate planning coordinator. From 1992 to 1998, he represented large industrial consumers of electricity and gas as an associate attorney for a Columbus Ohio law firm and served as a regulatory counsel for a Cleveland electric company, prior to returning to Columbia Gas as an attorney. In 2006, Kempic was named assistant general counsel for NiSource Corporate Services where he managed a staff that provided substantive legal support in multiple jurisdictions and advised the presidents of regulated revenue and their staffs on various regulatory and legal matters. Kempic also has held the position of director of rates and regulatory policy for Columbia Gas of Pennyslvania and Columbia Gas of Maryland, where he was responsible for designing and executing rate and regulatory strategies for the Companies with a focus on ensuring regulatory compliance and providing an array of low-income and customer programs.
Kempic has held professional memberships with a number of organizations, including the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and The Energy Association of Pennsylvania. He also previously served on the board of the United Way of Washington County, and currently serves on the board of the American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh.
Kempic holds a bachelor’s degree in computer and information science from the University of Pittsburgh and an associate engineering degree in solar heating and cooling from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1991, he earned his Juris Doctor from Capital University School of Law. Kempic has been licensed to practice law in four states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
Kempic is a native of Uniontown, Pa., and currently resides in Pittsburgh.
