Infrastructure Upgrade

What to Expect During a Project

Maintaining the safety of our customers and employees is our highest priority throughout our infrastructure-upgrade projects. Columbia Gas will maintain a strong communications program to provide information about upcoming work and progress as part of this commitment to safety.

Communications

Depending on the size of the project, property owners may receive an informational letter several weeks prior to the start of any work. In addition, residents may receive a personal visit from a Columbia Gas representative who will provide an overview of the construction project and address any outstanding issues a property owner may have. The project representative may leave an informational handout, which includes the Columbia Gas 24-hour help desk telephone number, the Company's website address, and a direct telephone number for each crew supervisor, in the event of future inquiries.

6-Step Infrastructure Upgrade Process

Step 1: Contractors will mark easements or public right-of-way and utility lines with paint, flags, stakes or a combination thereof.

Step 2: Construction starts on the new gas pipeline. The main line is usually located between the curb and the sidewalk on one side of the street. A new state-of-the-art, high-density polyethylene pipe will be installed.

Step 3: If necessary, the service lines to impacted customers' homes will be installed. This process may require excavation of the owner's property.

Step 4: Indoor gas meters may also be relocated to the exterior wall of the home or commercial building.

Step 5: The entire system will be connected and tested again to ensure that all connections are secure.

Step 6: Once gas service is restored, any excavation will be back-filled in preparation for final restoration of property. Due to weather and seasonal conditions beyond our control, full restoration of some properties may take time to complete. We will completely restore the area to its original or better condition, in accordance with local government standards, as soon as possible. If you have specific questions regarding your property, you may have a Columbia Gas representative contact you directly by calling 1-888-460-4332.
