Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania Announces $6 Million in Natural Gas Infrastructure Upgrades for York Area

Jan. 27, 2012

CANONSBURG, PA – Continuing with our commitment to providing safe, reliable and efficient natural gas delivery, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Inc. is excited to announce five significant pipeline improvement projects across the York area for 2012.

The projects total $6 million in discretionary capital investment and more than five miles of natural gas infrastructure upgrades.

“By investing in our infrastructure, we are really investing in the communities we serve,” said Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania President Carol Fox. “This upgraded infrastructure will continue to provide our customers with a safe, reliable and efficient way to heat their homes, take a warm shower and cook a hot meal. All with an affordable and abundant energy source that is the cleanest, most environmentally friendly fossil fuel available.”

Fox added, “Additionally, these investments will serve as the necessary energy foundation for small, commercial and industrial business growth across our region.”

More than 800 jobs have been directly or indirectly generated as Columbia Gas has invested more than $270 million state-wide in its natural gas delivery system since 2007.

Many of these projects upgrade aging bare steel and cast iron pipe with a state-of-the-art plastic natural gas delivery system. In the past four years, Columbia Gas has replaced twice as much bare steel infrastructure, compared to Pennsylvania peer natural gas distribution companies.

As an added safety measure, most residential and commercial service line upgrades will feature an excess flow valve, which automatically shuts off the natural gas service in the event of a large pressure differential, indicative of a leak or damage.

Projects scheduled across the York Area for 2012 include:
• Edgewood Road Project
o Community: Springettsbury
o Size: 4,000 feet
o Cost: $1.5 million

• East Princess Street Project

• Sunset/South Main Project

Projects will run through 2012, with differing start and anticipated completion dates. More information will be provided to the communities and customers involved closer to the start of the project. Additionally, some projects may require temporary lane closures or possible road detours.

“We would like to thank the local residents, business owners and customers in advance while we complete these important infrastructure improvement projects,” said Fox.

Some of the projects may require a temporary interruption of natural gas service. Columbia Gas will make personal contact with customers prior to shutting off service and to schedule service restoration.
