Cold Weather Minute: Energy Saving Laundry Tips

January 20, 2011

Household appliances account for nearly 17% of your home’s energy consumption with clothes washers and dryers topping the list.  Approximately 90% of the energy used for washing clothes in a washing machine is for heating the water, so when possible, use warm or cold water.  Clothes washers use nearly the same amount of energy regardless of the size of the load, so make sure you are washing and drying only full loads and match the water level on your washer to the size of the load.  Check your dryer vent and clear any blockages.  This will not only save energy but it may also prevent a fire.

Learn more tips to save energy, safely heat your home and save money this winter.
