Cold Weather Minute: Don't Let Your Heat Escape Through The Fireplace
January 13, 2011
An open damper on an unused fireplace in a well-insulated home can raise overall heating-energy consumption by 30 percent. Your fireplace is one of the easiest things to forget when it comes to energy efficiency but it is also a place where a lot of heat loss can occur in a home. Traditional fireplaces suck heated air up the chimney and out of your home causing you to lose both heat and money. When your fireplace is not in use, make sure you close the damper. This will not only prevent warm air from escaping, but it will also prevent cold air from coming down the chimney and into the house. It is also recommended that you have your chimney cleaned and inspected once a year.
