Cold Weather Minute: Energy Saving Kitchen Tips You Can Use This Holiday Season

November 24, 2010

A six-inch pan on an eight-inch burner will waste more than 40 percent of the energy being used. To keep costs down, make sure that when cooking on your gas stovetop, you match the size of the pan to the gas burner. This will allow more heat to reach the pan and less to escape through the surrounding air. Clean burners can also provide better heating, while reducing the amount of energy being used. Another helpful tip is when using the oven, keep the oven door closed at all times. Opening the oven door can lower the temperature inside by as much as 25 degrees, which will increase the cooking time and waste energy. Instead, use the oven light to check on the cooking status by peeking through the oven window.
